Defense Secretary Ashton Carter spoke on November 7th at the Reagan Defense Forum and identified Russia and China as potential threats to the international order. He also spoke about the challenge posed by ISIS. Carter said that the U.S. must take a strong and balanced approach to these challenges, just as President Reagan did in the 1980s.

On October 27, 2015, Robert Zoellick, former Deputy Secretary of State and U.S. Trade Representative, spoke at the Heritage Foundation on the topic of U.S. policy in the Asia-Pacific region. Zoellick focused on U.S. economic and political interests in the region which, he believes, will continue to increase in the years ahead.

Micah Zenko, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, discussed his new book in which he contends that our leaders and foreign policy makers should try to get inside the minds of their real and potential adversaries when formulating policy.

On September 15th, Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton spoke at Hillsdale College’s Constitution Day in Washington, D.C., on the constitutional foundations of American foreign policy. He stressed the founder’s view that the Congress must play an important role in U.S. foreign policy, and he pointed to the need to revive the use of treaties for important agreements between the U.S. and other nations.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson spoke to the Council on Foreign Relations on November 4th about the importance of cyber security to the protection of our homeland. He emphasized the need to decrease current vulnerabilities which have already resulted in security breaches.

On November 4th, the Center for Strategic and International Studies hosted Ben Rhodes, Deputy National Security Adviser, who spoke about U.S. policy towards Burma in the wake of recent elections there.

Secretary of State John Kerry spoke recently at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace about the threats and opportunities confronting U.S. policy in the Middle East. Kerry defended the Iran nuclear deal and the administration’s approach to defeating ISIS. He also stated his belief that democracy was possible for the countries of the broader Middle East.
