Alongside The United States Meets Europe, participants will attend The Future of US Foreign Policy Conference, which will further explore the concepts of soft power and cultural diplomacy, and the role they play in US foreign policy:

The United States Meets Europe is a network of individuals from across the world, who have an interest in international affairs, cultural exchange, and the European-American relationship. Members can join the forum by taking part in a USAME Weeklong Seminar. The forthcoming USAME Weeklong Seminar will be held in Washington DC & New York from 3rd – 9th January 2011, and will focus on the following theme:
“Beyond Mars and Venus: The Transatlantic Relationship in the New World Order.”
The Forum is aimed at young professionals and students, economists, diplomatic and political representatives, and civil society practitioners. The weeklong seminar will consist of lectures, seminars, workshops and panel discussions by leading figures from the fields of politics, diplomacy, civil society, academia, and the private sector, which will offer a range of perspectives on the issues at stake, the challenges ahead, and the new strategies and approaches being taken to address these challenges. The program will be complemented by cultural and social activities that will provide an opportunity to experience the diversity of the respective cultures and provide networking opportunities between the participants themselves, as well as between the participants and speakers.

Two decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War, the foreign policy goals and priorities of individual nation states must increasingly take into account an interdependent, multi-polar international environment, and must increasingly balance the pursuit of national interests with the pursuit of global public goods.
Two years into the new US administration and following the mid-term elections, American citizens and the international community wait expectantly to see how America’s foreign policy approach will adapt to the new challenges confronting the Obama administration. Over the past two years, the international community has come to see soft power and cultural diplomacy play a more significant role within US foreign policy and international relations in general, as it has been recognized that these approaches can general multi-lateral consensus as opposed to confrontation. However, the challenges facing the international community within the context of globalization continue to deepen due to a fragmented international framework filled with mistrust, competition and economic and political fragility.
The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy has therefore developed The Future of US Foreign Policy: “The Revival of Soft Power and Cultural Diplomacy?” to explore the concepts of soft power and cultural diplomacy and assess the role they currently play in U.S. foreign policy. The program will then consider the potential for these strategies in the future and will provide clear recommendations for policy makers in the U.S. and internationally.
Conference Participants
The conference participants will include young professionals, students and scholars, civil society practitioners, private sector representatives, journalists, and other interested stakeholders from across the world.
