The article “A Nuclear Weapons Free NATO” is a well-reasoned and cogent argument for the elimination of NATO’s current tactical nuclear weapons capability. Our political and military leaders would do well to heed the authors’ recommendations. That this elimination has not yet been done demonstrates the intellectual sclerosis that our military policies are suffering from. However, in making their case, the arguments they present inevitably, and, I’m sure, unintentionally, raise the more important question: “Is there any need in today’s world for NATO?” Many of the statements they make tend to answer this unasked question in the negative.
